Why do people think that Troy Smith will not be very successfull in nfl?
Ebad S asked:
Sure he messed up in the game against Florida, but can you name a quarterback who hasn’t messed up against a good defensive team. I actually believe that he can be good in the nfl if he works on his accuracy and power more. Maybe he is short for the nfl, but he has the skill needed. He should work on his footwork, but like I said before that is all fixable.

no one is hype over troy smith 4 two reasons…number one there are QBs in the draft wit stronger arms thhan his…and 2 he is shorter than almost every lineman in the nfl which will impair his vision

I don’t think he will be successful because he is like Michael Vick. He is fast and has a good arm. Troy Smith was over rated when he was in college. He was only good because he had some of the best receivers in the NCAA. I think he will never end up to be like Mike. Also he probably wont see much if any playing time in his rookie and sophomore seasons.

You can’t fix SHORT, I mean what he is going to wear stilts, or lifts in his cleats? That is the biggest reason it is thought he will fail. Personally I think he will be a back up, mostly because the height and so can’t be very successful in a sense.

I agree
troy smith can be a successful QB in the NFL
but it is toatally in his hands, He still has alot to learn
he already has the leadership qualities for an NFL QB, but he still has to become a better desison maker
I think he will have a opertunity and a team that believes in him

The biggest thing is his size. He is gonna have a hard time seeing the whole field at that height. Also His accuracy is not that great, at the combines he was noticably underthrowing his receivers.

same people that thought drew brees would be a backup. troy smith comes from a top tier system and has some excellent tools. he could be a solid QB in the NFL. what he lacks are the big-time metrics of brady quinn and jamarcus russell. so what – i would take him in the third round in a heartbeat.

Alot of scouts aren’t crazy about his height. He’s 6′1″ and you’re average NFL QB is around 6′3″. And compared to other positions, it’s significantly important to have a back that is tall enough to see other both lines when back in the pocket.
You also have to look at the size and quality of the other QB’s in the draft with him. Brady Quinn stands at 6″3″ and is about 15 pounds heavier then Smith. JaMarcus Russell stands at 6′6″ and 263 pounds. The need of QB’s in the draft as well effects his status. Oakland is looking for a big, tough QB who can take some hits and still throw the ball. Both the Texans and possibly the Lions could take a QB. The Lions have been leaning towards an OT as of late. But after the Top 8 picks, you probably won’t see a QB go until at least the second round.
Also Ohio State’s Pro Day isn’t until March 10th and that could have a positive effect on his draft position if he does well there.

Troy Smith to me is a Peyton Manning…..cant win the big game. Even though Peyton did win the Super Bowl, he hasn’t proven himself to me. Troy Smith will be a great QB, don’t get me wrong, but he just isn’t solid to me right now. watch for him to go to a team in need and he will make that team a good team, maybe green bay will pick him up cause Farve is getting old. but that is a stretch.

simple…he is too small and notice how scrambling qb’s dont have as much success as pocket passers. Mike Vick??? or Tom Brady/ Peyton manning. and for the person who says he is like peyton manning…you oculdnt be any more wrong

You answered your own question. Think about it he’s probably been playing quarterback since at least 9th grade so that means 8 years of playing organized football and you’re telling me he needs to work on his accuracy, his arm strength and his footwork. Why should I an NFL team spend money to develop something that may never get there? He should have been working on all that for 8 years.

The reason is, he is a worse version of Michael Vick. He can not throw as strong or as accurate as Vick and can not run as fast. He got dominated by Florida in the National Championship. Also he is too small. He is barrelly 6 foot which won’t allow him to see over the linemen. The only quarterbacks in the NFL that are successfull that are small have an incredibly accurate arm i.e. Drew Brees. And finally, he’s just not good.

Did you see the National Championship?

He short and doesn’t have the best accuracy
i was watching espn and in a contest he missed every try except one and didn’t even make the twenty yarder.

Heres why the hype went down for Troy Smith….what did he do all throughout college? Scramble Scramble Scramble looked like he was playin backyard with some of the teams out there. Heres the thing he can’t do that in the NFL hes not as fast as Vick or athletic if u ask me. He is a pretty accurate passer but is too short which could create problems seeing meaning he’ll overthrow some of his targets.

I kind of like it that he is being downgraded. Hopefully for his sake he goes to a good team as a backup for now. Even though he is short for an NFL qb, he has improved a lot the last couple of years buying time in the pocket rather than just running.
I guess it’s a crapshoot though, there have been plenty of good college quarterbacks, even heisman trophy winners that struggle in the NFL. Then you have some unheralded quarterbacks have stellar careers like Brady or Unitas.
